One of the challenges anyone faces when speaking to an audience is owning the room.
The simple fact is that when you agree to step on the stage, you are agreeing to care for that audience and protect them. That means if something goes wrong, you take charge because you’re the one with the microphone.
You’re the one that the audience will be looking to for guidance.
A fire alarm or emergency situation is not the time to look around and wonder to whom you should hand the microphone, it is time to step up and take charge.
