This one might be a little uncomfortable. I want to take a couple of minutes to talk about how you should eat before you speak.
Early on I made this mistake on a regular basis, indulging in the sometimes rich meals that were being served to the audience before standing up to speak, only to find that the heavy food had adverse effects on my energy, and sometimes my voice.
Obviously, you need to eat to have energy. The best way to do that is to have a little salad with a light dressing and some sort of protein with the salad. That will give you good energy to keep you going through your speech.
Avoid, at all costs, those pre-planned meals that have a lot of rich, creamy gravy and dressings. The high-carb meals are going to slow you down and bring your energy down. Not only that, they’re also going to give you some phlegm production in your nasal area and throat. That’s going to really destroy your ability to keep your voice strong for a long period of time.
